PHOTOGRAPHY: History, Historic Photographic Technologies, Archival Management and Preventive Conservation
Purpose
The course aim to provide a general knowledge of the history of photography and specific information on the structure, composition and identification of historic photographic materials and general knowledge on the management of photographic archives: inventory, cataloguing, digitization, preventive conservation and proper handling.
Training offered
The study of photographic materials is an essential step for proper conservation, restoration and cataloguing of photography. Thanks to the teaching of high level experts and looking at the original materials held in the ICCD collection, the course will provide a basic knowledge to understand and identify the main historic photographic process and techniques.
Through theoretical and practical lessons the course will investigate: the “unicum” processes; Calotypes, gelatine and collodion plates; film-based negative materials; salted and gelatine paper prints; non-silver technique; Colour materials; Laboratory: printing on salted, cyanotype and gum bichromate papers, use of the darkroom and the evolution of photographic devices.
An overview of the history of photography will also be discussed during the course (the origin, evolution and dissemination of photography), as a premises to better understand the main styles and approaches, related to the ICCD’s history and activity, such as: Documentary photography, Heritage’s photography, photo-journalism, aerial photography.
The session focussed on archival management and preventive conservation practices will provide knowledge on different issues, including: inventory (negatives and positives); scientific cataloguing (using the ICCD F and FF norms); critical approach to archive the series; preventive conservation (hygrographic and other environmental monitoring; good practices for handling; use of proper materials for conservation); digitization (methods of digitization; ICCD systems for management and use of digital images).
